Sydney Phillips served with the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War. With No. 21 Squadron RAF, in February 1942 his Bristol Blenheim crashed into the Mediterranean Sea, after a bombing run against Palermo, Sicily. Tony Elliot served with the Royal Marines during the Second World War. He immigrated to Canada after the war, and joined the Canadian Army when the Korean War broke out in the summer of 1950. He was sent to Korea as a tank driver with “C Squadron” of the Lord Strathcona’s Horse.
