But 12 February, 1941, I joined the Merchant Navy as a seaman aboard the motor vessel [SS] Reginolite, carrying oil between North and South America. In the spring of 1942, as able bodied seaman aboard the Reginolite, sailing alone along the Atlantic east coast, in one day, I counted 14 Allied ships sunk...

    Eberhard Von Ketelhodt served on U-575 in the Kriegsmarine (German Navy) during the Second World War. He recounts a couple of submarine patrols, including one in 1942 during which U-333 sunk a German blockade runner, the MV Spreewald. U-333's commander had thought the Spreewald was an Allied merchant ship.

    During the Second World War, Ed Trott started with the Canadian Army and finished with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). In the air force, he was tail and mid-upper gunner on Handley Page Halifax bombers with No. 432 Squadron, RCAF.     Ernest Baird flew a full tour as a pilot of an Avro Lancaster bomber with 12 Squadron, Royal Air Force. He flew numerous sorties over Germany, including against Dresden. He also flew a mining mission over a Norwegian fjord.     Ernest Brown served with Canada's Merchant Navy during the Second World War. During the Battle of the Atlantic, he crossed the ocean for the first time in a convoy, docking in Liverpool, England, which at the time was under German air attacks. In this excerpted clip. Brown describes the destruction caused when an incendiary bomb landed on a ship's deck in Liverpool.

    Flavio Da Silva (The Memory Project)

    Flavio Da Silva was born in Georgetown, British Guiana, and joined the Royal Air Force in 1941. He received his initial training, but was then selected for additional training to become a meteorologist. He completed his courses at the University of Toronto, and was then sent to the Mediterranean theater.
