    Art Barker (Primary Source)

    Art Barker served with RCAF, 427 Squadron, from 1942 to 1945. He was the tail gunner in an Handley Halifax bomber, and flew a full tour (30 raids), plus an additional four. Mr. Barker participated in significant raids over German cities, as well as dropping mines along the Norwegian coastline. The crew’s pilot, Don Hepburn, won the Distinguish Flying Cross for a bombing raid over Karlsruhe, Germany in December 1944.     Arthur "Art" Frederick Brown (Primary Source)

     In 2009, The Memory Project interviewed Arthur Brown, a veteran of the Second World War. The following recording (and transcript) is an excerpt from this interview. In 1942, Brown enlisted as an artilleryman in the Canadian Army in Hamilton, Ontario, and completed his training in Orillia, Ontario. He served in Italy, Sicily, and the Netherlands with the 11th Army Field Regiment. In this testimony, Brown discusses various experiences in Europe, including getting hit with shrapnel when a gun he was loading fired prematurely. Brown served in the Canadian military for 32 years and was named to the Order of Military Merit in 1974. He died on 5 February 2010 in Kelowna, British Columbia, at the age of 87.     Arthur B. Wahlroth (Primary Source)

    Arthur (Art) Wahlroth joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 and trained at RAF Stations Abbington and Harcourt in the UK. He was assigned to the 405 Squadron and undertook missions in Germany (Berlin, Cologne, and the Ruhr Valley). He also served in North Africa, where he conducted night raids against Rommel's forces, and in Italy during the invasion of Sicily and operations in Naples, Salerno, and Monte Casino.Please be advised that Memory Project primary sources may deal with personal testimony that reflect the speaker’s recollections and interpretations of events.     Arthur Byford was a pilot with No. 426 (Thunderbird) Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force from 1948 to 1951.
